Battle River Farms - Doug and Heather Grovet
Me - passionate about my family, my horses and God - not necessarily in that order!
Let me introduce myself. I am Heather Grovet, born, rasied and have lived my entire life in central Alberta. I married Doug in 1983, and since then we have lived in the Galahad area, never moving more than a mile or two from the home farm where Doug was raised.
Doug and I have very different equestrian backgrounds. I grew up on the farm, and some of my earliest memories are riding horseback behind my parents as they checked cattle. As a youngster I belonged to both 4-H Light Horse and the local Pony Club, and competed on a variety of horses, some broke better than others. As a teenager I earned money by purchasing green horses at the local auction, riding them for the summer, and then reselling them. One of my equine high-lights was competing at both the Alberta and then National levels in Pony Club's tetrathelon.
I basically got out of horses when my children were young, but when I got back into showing at the local level I realized that I was mounted on an average looking sorrel horse, parked besides sorrel horses on each side of me. Something had to change. That was where my interest in Paint horses began, I love how each one is different in their own way. My first Paint was purchased in 2001.
Doug grew up in the Galahad area, and his idea of horsepower was either a fast car or a snowmobile. He probably didn't know what he was getting into when he married his horse crazy wife, but he has been a good sport through the years, supporting me by holding horses at shows, mucking out an occasional stall and even designing and putting up a fantastic foaling barn! He owns and operates Battle River Landscaping, and enjoys making an eyesore into a beautiful yard.
I've worked as an LPN at Castor Hospital since 1984, and in my spare time have had thirteen books published. These are children's Christian books, and most feature horses! I've also had the opportunity to write about my favorite topic - horses once again! - for a number of Canadian magazines including Horses All, Western Horse Review, Alberta Bits and Canadian Cowboy. I'm an enthusiastic Christian and very active in the Sedgewick Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Doug and I are parents to two lovely daughters, Danelle, born in 1987 and now an RN and married to Dana Wright, and Kaitlin, born in 1991, who has graduated with a business degree and is married to Tyler Bishop. We are so proud of our daughters. They are beautiful young women both inside and out. And Danelle and Dana now have three children; Lily, Mira and Luke, making us grandparents (and very young ones at that!) and Kaitlin and Tyler have a son and daughter: Brooks and Nora.
I show at both the APHA and local small show levels, but what I really enjoy is raising a few top quality Paint foals each year. My focus is producing babies that can excel in Western pleasure and all-round events. A lot of people raise foals and sell them, so why should you buy one from me? After all, I'm certainly not the biggest breeder around.
I guess I would say that one of the things a horse from Battle River Farm really has to offer is genetics. I am a huge pedigree fan, and have gone out of my way to import my breeding stock from all across North America with an eye for modern Western pleasure bloodlines. My stallion and each of my mares are from Superior Western pleasure bloodlines going back to leading AQHA sires. Each carries colour genetics, and each is 5 panel negative to help you avoid the most common equine disorders.

The other thing I can offer is more difficult to explain. I guess some places would call it "customer service". If you buy a foal or older horse from me, I promise to be honest, fair and ethical in all our dealings.I will send you pictures, pedigrees, video and information on that foal as it grows until it is ready to leave here. And I will follow up with you on a regular basis if you require any assistance or have any questions. And if the time comes that you ever need to sell that horse, I will do my best to help promote him to others.
In other words, I will try to live the "golden rule", and treat you the way I'd want to be treated.
My goal isn't just to breed, raise and sell top Western pleasure horses. My goal is to honour God while I breed, raise and sell top Western pleasure horses.
We have used Weebly to create this website. Weebly has not been very mobile phone friendly. If you are unable to open our other website pages, which include horses for sale, show horses, mares, 2022 foals, etc, please message me on Facebook at Heather Grovet, or text me at 780-385-5035, and I'll send you the link to the various pages. Hopefully we can get this problem solved soon.
